Also known as: Fall Anime Impressions Part 2. But that would be such a boring title.
Alongside watching anime and....school I guess, I'm also fixing up the blog a bit. Which is to say, I'm adjusting my tags because I had way too many pointless ones, and I'm fixing up a bunch of old typos. And I'm having ideas for more posts and stuff, which is always good.
For now though, here are some more fall impressions.
Girls und Panzer
I remember looking at the picture for this on MAL and going, “High school girls with tanks...seems legit” although I'm not sure it was legit in any way. But whatever, I think anyone who has read this blog before knows I will sit through damn near anything, and I DID watch Upotte!. This actually isn't as weird as that one. Basically there's this activity called Panzerfahren (I think that's the right spelling...or at least it would be from my German class) and the main girl moved to this school to avoid playing it because she's a wimp, or something like that. I don't know. Except then suddenly the school has it and she's incredibly upset.
Then the student council threatens expulsion and one of them goes “This is tyranny worse than Hitler!”. In what universe is EXPULSION worse than killing LIKE EVERYONE? Gah. No. Also the subbers randomly decided to throw a bunch of German in even though no one is actually using German in the audio and I just kind of accepted it because uhm...well, I kind of speak German, so whatever.
The point is, it wasn't even as ridiculous as I expected, and I am totally keeping it.
Sukitte Ii na yo
Before I watched the first episode of this, my boyfriend told me it was really cute. And I was thinking “oh hey, I love cute” and thought I would like it. As it turns out...I do not love it. I mean I don't HATE it, but it's really boring, at least from the first episode.
Basically you have this really popular guy, and then you have this girl who is like...against friends and dating and...things? The girl seems to have worse trust issues than I do. The guy wants to go out with her and she doesn't want to go out with him but then she calls him because some creepy guy is following her and...I have no idea. I guess the whole thing will be about them falling in love? I can accept that, but it certainly hasn't been cute yet and it's kinda dull right now. As I told my boyfriend, “it's not cute until it gives me diabeetus”.
On the bright side, it does have Takahiro Sakura and Ai Kayano as the main characters.
Busou Shinki
I watched the first episode of Busou Shinki Moon Angel when that was on back...whenever that was. It wasn't bad at all, but it was only like two minutes long, so it didn't really tell me much. All I knew was that they're little things that can fight for you and do whatever else and it made me think of a weird blend between Chobits and Angelic Layer.
Having watched the first two episodes of the normal series....still makes me think of a weird blend of Chobits and Angelic Layer. You have these little Shinki thingies who are like little girls that are 8 inches tall that'll basically do whatever for you, though they're specifically designed to fight. The main guy, who really isn't very important, has three of them, and magically obtains a fourth one. Two of them are scantily clad, and they're all devoted to him, and I feel like this is probably some creepy guy fantasy of women serving them.
Still gonna keep watching it though.
Zetsuen no Tempest
First off, I would ike to say I have had enough of Shakespeare this semester. When you're an English major the man is everywhere. EVERYWHERE. I've read four of his plays in the last eight weeks, plus some of his poetry, I'm in the middle of a fifth play and I still have three of them to go. After this semester I wish to never deal with him again.
BUT I am totally willing to accept watching an anime that's based on one of his works. (Interestingly enough, The Tempest is the last of his plays I'll have to read this semester.)
Anyway, you have this dude whose best friend disappeared after his sister (Boy #1's girlfriend) died, and you also have this magic chick on an island (gee that sounds familiar). Then you have people turning to stone and some group trying to destroy the world and...I never understand that girl. Destroy the world and then...what? You destroyed it. What the heck is left to do?
Other than that, it totally uses some lines straight out of The Tempest (except modernized because Japanese people do not speak like Middle English) and it generally seems like it's going to be pretty good.
Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo
My boyfriend looked at the title of this, confirmed the meaning of “kanojo” with me and then said he wasn't watching it. I responded by actually glancing at the summary and pointing out it didn't sound as bad as the title....not that it really sounded good, either.
Then I watched episode one and one of my first reactions was, “Wait, wait, WAIT...this guy is running AWAY from girls and their breasts? Something isn't right here. There's no way I'm watching anime.”
As it turned out, I was totally watching anime. About a “normal” guy who lives in a dorm with a bunch of “crazy” people because he can't stop himself from rescuing homeless cats. I wouldn't call him normal because dammit he's an anime guy and yet he isn't interested in these girls that are like sleeping in his room and stuff. C'mon now.
Well this other girl moves in who totally can't take care of herself and he has to take care of her. This might turn into a guilty pleasure, just like Medaka Box did last season. (Yes I like Medaka Box. I know you're judging me. Oh well. I earned it.)
Little Busters!
This is probably my favorite of the season so far. It's a group of friends in high school, who want to do one last thing together before they finally have to split off into normal non-school life. Their “leader” declares that they should start a baseball team, and they all just go along with it. I can't even express why I love it. I mean it's silly and the characters seem interesting and lovable and...yeah.
I am also, however, terrified of it. Freaking terrified. Why? Well I came across it while I was looking at some visual novels and realized it's an adaptation of something by Studio Key...which means I now expect it to rip my heart out at some point. Maybe it won't (nobody tell me) but maybe it will. I'm just so scared.
