Genies, Crazies and...More Crazies

Hokay, here I am with the third and final bit of my fall impressions. Which is being written while I watch episode 3 of Girls und Panzer...or finish it anyway. I wonder if the subbers realize that not EVERYONE watching it speaks German and is going to know what all of it means. Yeah, I know because I took two years of it, but did everyone else? Probably not.

Back on topic though...yeah. Here's the other six I'm watching.

Magi

I knew a lot of people who were excited for this anime. And by “a lot” I mean “two”. One of those people was my boyfriend, meaning I was a bit wary to start off, and the other one was someone I actually trust. Basically I had no freaking clue if I should expect to enjoy this one or not.

It seems to revolve around two main people: Aladdin and Ali Baba. The two meet up when Aladdin is being a little thief (cue: Gotta keep one jump ahead of the bread line, one swing ahead of the sword, I steal only what I can't afford...that's everything) and they both get in trouble for it. Then there are slaves and a large blue man who is a genie named Ugo who basically does whatever Aladdin needs to (cue: well Ali Baba had them forty thieves, Scheherazade had a thousand tales...) and that's incredibly helpful. Uhm...let's see...Ali Baba is a secret badass who wants to pretend he's only out for himself. Also they have a magic carpet (cue: I can show you the wooooooorld, shining, shimmering, splendid...tell me princess, when did you last let your heart deciiiiiiiiide).

So far there's no plot. I mean okay, Ali Baba wants to get rich by going into one of the dungeons because this is a video game plot apparently. But he wants wealth and I have no freaking clue what Aladdin actually wants.

And yes I plan to spend the entire series with music from the movie going through my head.

Medaka Box Abnormal

Yes. I'm totally watching the second season of Medaka Box. I already mentioned in my last post that the first season was a major guilty pleasure for me, so OBVIOUSLY I'm going to watch the second season. Except I have a feeling this season is going to be even more “WTF” than the first one. Of course when I say I have a feeling, I actually mean episode one totally surpassed the entirety of last season's insanity all on its own. Impressive, no?

At the end of season one, Medaka fought this little sonuvabitch whose name I can't remember, and they took out like half of the school while fighting. The place hasn't been fixed yet, and then they do MORE damage when Little Sonuvabitch's sister, Code-Speaking Crazy Chick (maybe I should be more creative with these names?) attacks Medaka, and the Judo Girl gets involved and...that looks like it's going to be the entire season. People trying to murder Medaka.

Yeah, that sounds like high school. Except usually it's a bit more metaphorical, not an actual battle...

Also Hiroshi Kamiya is in this season. Works for me.

Chuunbiyou demo Koi ga Shitai!

Oh KyoAni... This series is as pretty as ever, because, y'know, KyoAni. Thankfully this is NOT based on anything from Studio Key, so I don't have to be terrified of watching it. I'm relatively confident it's not going to make me cry.

It's about people who have (or have had in the past) this thing called Chuunibyou syndrome, which is when they're effing crazy and think they're fantasy people and have powers and that kind of thing. The main guy has grown out of it, though you do get occasional flashbacks and other reminders of when he used to be like that. The main girl is STILL like that, totally wrapped up in it, and so is one of her friends who comes in during episode three.

The series seems okay so far, but I get so embarrassed for the characters when I'm watching that it hurts. I mean seriously, I sit there and watch it and I'm like “ohmigod stop please stop I cannot handle this”. But it might be fun as it goes on.

K

Okay, first of all...I have NO CLUE what this series is actually ABOUT. It seems like two or three different groups all want to kill the main character, and he has no idea why. He also has a cat that's a girl...and a cat....literal catgirl...dammit Japan.

So far this reminds me of Durarara!!. They show you about half a million characters in the first episode, throw you into things, and kind of expect you to know what's going on. Thankfully they don't NAME all of those characters right off the bat, because the confusion/name overload probably would have killed me. Now here's a difference from like, my first impressions of Durarara!!.

With Durarara!!, I not only couldn't keep track of people and what was going on, but I was also really bored. Like I wasn't even interested until episode nine. K, on the other hand, had my attention within the first minute or two, and so far it hasn't lost that attention. So even though I haven't the foggiest (thank you Hermione Granger for introducing me to this phrase) what's going on, I'm in love anyway.

Robotics;Notes

Robotics;Notes is the striking story of a boy using technology to see his best friend in bikinis...okay that's a lie. Robotics;Notes is ACTUALLY the so-far-not-striking story of a boy who really likes video games, who DOES use technology to see his best friend in a maid dress, and ALSO has to help her build a robot.

Because that's what we do in high school. We build robots. Then we enter those robots into competitions of some kind. I don't really know. But basically they have this...robot building club, I think. And that robot building club needs a really BIG budget to make a really awesome robot. The school doesn't want to give them that budget, but they end up with a deal to get it if they can win in this preliminary competition.

Erm...yeah that's all I've got. It seems like it could be interesting. Or not INTERESTING but not so boring that I have to drop it.

Psycho-pass

Before I watched this, I was texting my boyfriend. It was like a week ago, so I don't have those texts on hand, but it was a series something like this:

“This guy is creepy”
“Suddenly rape”
“Let's blow up the rapist...okay”

And he asked if I was watching Psycho-pass. I said no, because...no, I was watching Btooom!. THEN I watched Psycho-pass and understood why he thought I was watching it before, because those exact same things happened just...in a totally different way.

This anime appears to be a dystopian future in which we have technology that shows someone's likelihood of committing a crime, and if they're obviously going to (or already did) you can go ahead and kill them. There doesn't appear to be a real plot so far from the first episode, but it looks like we're following a girl who is new to this job, and has to get used to it and blah blah blah.

Did I really just use “blah blah blah” in talking about something that looks incredibly badass? Erm...yeah. Okay.

There. That's everything I'm watching this season. Whew. Now for more schoolwork, because they tell me I have to read Jane Eyre and Dune. And write papers and stuff.
