First of all, the second Aniblog Tourney starts today. I'm a participant, and you should all go vote for me here. I'll give you virtual hugs and candy and other good things, I promise. (The polls should be open by now, though they're not showing up for me. Le sigh.)
Because I am insane, I am now following 21 spring anime. And you know something? I like all of them. See, I've finally given in and actually started dropping things I don't like. Which means if I say I'm watching it, I like it. Or I'm at least fascinated enough to keep going. I already gave my thoughts on Space Brothers (I dropped it midway through episode 2, by the way), Shirokuma Café (still awesome), Folktales From Japan, and Kore wa Zombie desu ka – Of the Dead.
Everything else? Let's see. This post will get way too long if I talk about ALL of my other anime, so we'll go with nine of them and put off the rest until...oh, let's call it Tuesday.
Saki Episode of Side A
This series is all right. As far as I can tell, it's about girls playing mahjong. That's not really a problem, all on its own. I mean we've got series about playing children's card games (Yu-Gi-Oh! and all of its offspring, some of which shouldn't have been born), tennis (Prince of Tennis), go (Hikaru no Go), karuta (Chihayafuru) and whatever else, so why not a game about mahjong? The thing is, those other series have compelling characters, or, you know, something that makes them interesting. (I'm guessing when it comes to Prince of Tennis—I've never seen that one.) This one...erm...doesn't. I mean I'm gonna keep watching it anyway, in the hopes that it gets something, but for the moment, it's severely lacking.
Eureka Seven Ao
Okay, okay, I haven't watched the original Eureka Seven. I know—gasp! How can I possibly have not watched that? Well I'm planning to, I just haven't...actually done it...In any case, I have to say I don't actually know what this series is about yet. Looks like this kid's town was destroyed by something and then he got angry about it because like...DEATH. I'm going to keep watching it, mostly because...well...slothy! (Sloths. They have the power to make me do anything.)
Medaka Box
This series revolves around a guy who is good friends with a girl named Medaka, who becomes the student body president their first year in high school. She pulls it off mostly due to her promise to have a suggestion box, which anything can go into and she'll see to it that it's taken care of. Of course that responsibility gets shunted onto her friend. I'll admit I'm a little confused on this one. I'd heard (and a friend of mine had as well) that this series is terrible. Now, I know it's not like...great. But it's definitely not terrible. I'd go so far as to say I even like it a little bit. Not a ton, but a little. It's kinda cute. (Don't judge me.)
Fate/zero 2
Okay, let's be honest here. The first half of the series was thoroughly badass. The Holy Grail Wars themselves are hardcore, the characters (Masters and Servants) are brilliant to the point that it's really, really hard to not want the vast majority of them to win even though only one of them can. ...Except Gilgamesh (or Archer, as he's called in this) because he's as much of a tool as he was in Fate/stay night. He should just die. But I know from Fate/stay night he doesn't. Blast it. Anyway, so far the second half is shaping up to be just as badass. It doesn't disappoint me.
Upotte!
This right here equates to my “the fuck am I watching” of the season. Seriously. It makes no sense. For anyone who doesn't know, it's about a school where all the girls are guns. Literally. They're girls, but they're guns. Who also wield guns. There was a point where one girl had a stomach ache, which was actually a spring issue. Because that's how these girls work. And the main girl/gun has a habit of shooting at their new teacher. So much weirdness.
Haiyore! Nyaruko-san
Okay, so I know an OVA came out for this sometime last year, but I didn't watch it. Maybe I should have, as it might have given me a hint of what I was in for. This series is about a typical high school student (you've met him before; his name is Typical Male Lead) who gets attacked by some giant alien thing, and then he gets his supernatural/intergalactic protector, who happens to be basically a creature straight out of Lovecraft. Except she's a cute little girl who has an obsession with doujinshi. It's just so odd, but then again, this is Japan.
Tsuritama
I have no idea what to make of this anime. It seems to be about a guy who moves to a new town with his grandma (this happens a lot). When he goes off to school, some other kid goes to his new house and tells his grandma “I'll live here now” and she's like “okay, that's okay” because this is natural. So the new kid insists on being friends with the main guy and this other guy, and I really have no sense of a plot, but the characters seem interesting. The main one has a mental problem where he feels like he's drowning when he gets nervous...also there's a shiny new seiyuu!
Sengoku Collection
Here we have the OTHER major dose of weird for the season. For some reason a bunch of the old warlords from the Sengoku Era (y'know, Oda Nobunaga, Ieyasu Tokugawa, Toyotomi, Date Masamune, etc.) have become lolis and are in modern day Japan, mostly confused about what's going on. Nobunaga is determined to get back. Tokugawa, pictured above, becomes a famous idol and has no interest in returning. I'm really looking forward to the others. This series is so wonky, but I find it endlessly fascinating.
And....
Zetman
Watch it. Watch it right NOW. I was legitimately 30 seconds into this anime when I texted a friend to say “this series is awesome, watch it”. It's been maintained through episode two so far. Basically in this series, there's...you know what, I can't even describe it. It's just pure action and badassery and GO WATCH IT. Sometime within the next five minutes. I promise you won't regret it. (The opening theme is awesome, too.)
