Starting a Spin-Off - A Final Fantasy X-2 Psychlogy Blog

The heroines of Square Enix's FINAL FANTASY X-2, Yuna (center), Rikku (left), and Paine (right).

If there’s another medium besides anime and manga that really gets me going, it’s none other than Japanese role-playing video games. JRPGs have been a big part of my life and with the announcement of two of Square Enix’s top RPGs, Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2, being remastered in HD for the Sony PlayStation 3 and Vita, this is a good time to come up with a side sister blog to this one in the form of a Final Fantasy X-2 blog.

Final Fantasy X-2 covered the adventures of three young women as they go out, hunt for relics in the form of video spheres, kill some monsters, and save the world in the process. All while having fun doing so. The main character was a girl named Yuna (in the center of the photo), who helped saved the world of Spira from an entity calleded Sin in Final Fantasy X. The other two girls are Rikku (left) and Paine (right). Rikku appeared with Yuna in FFX, while Paine is a new character. Together with a few others, they make up the Gullwings. The game is noted to be much more light-hearted than its predecessor.

So, why FFX-2 and not FFX? FFX-2 covers an interesting time where people are still trying to find themselves during peace. In FFX, Sin was a constant fixture in people’s lives. Very depressing, yes, but it gave some folks some motivation to fight for something dear to them. With Sin permanently gone, those very same people now focus on other intrinsic/extrinsic goals they may not have thought about while they were thinking about survival. The amount of side content covering the minor characters in this game is astounding. It’s full of interesting perspectives, quirky dialogue, silly antics, and relatable conversations people have with each other. I also have the behavior of Paine from time to time.

In some ways, FFX-2 reflects the world today. We live in mostly quiet times. While there have been wars, nothing has truly escalated to the point of a global war a la World War II. The many characters of FFX-2 represent a variety of looks at how people develop, think, and behave around each other.

Some examples of the topics I plan to cover are:

  • The fact that a woman (Yuna) is pretty much the savior of the world.
  • The conflicts between the different races of Spira.
  • The importance of family.
  • Having proud mentors.
  • Obsession with the past with regards to the video spheres.
  • Why people still love secrets (Bevelle)

With that said, if anyone is interested in helping out with the FFX-2 blog, feel free to let me know in the comments section below or email me at tonyyao82(AT)gmail(DOT)com. I don’t know when I will start the blog, but it will definitely be sometime later this year as a copy of the HD remakes will be in my possession when it is released in North America.

When that time comes. get ready to give in and be surrounded by the world of real emotion. It’s showtime, girls…
