It shouldn't be a surprise to people that the Gurren Lagann TV series would get revived by Aniplex USA, since they were the ones who licensed the two movies in North America. Knowing who the hell Aniplex is, they plan to re-release Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann in two forms that will pierce through your wallet -- I'm not kidding. Despite the inevitable outcome, I am glad to see the series back, since Gurren Lagann was one of those shows that manage to brighten my life when I was going through some tough times.
Due to the immense shock that will be had, let's start with the DVD release that will cost you $139.98. Aniplex's DVD release of Gurren Lagann will include all 27 episodes of the series, along with the special features (Such as the Shokotan interview and the Yoko goes to Gainax segment) that were present in Bandai Entertainment's release. But that's not all, you are getting an artbook, 12 post cards, the show's soundtrack, a nice art case, and a poster two sided poster of Yoko and Kamina -- not too bad.
And now for the finishing move that will make the most manliest of people cry. Other than the DVD set, Aniplex is insuring viewers that they can import the GLORIO looking Gurren Lagann Blu-ray set for only $549.98 -- Wallet Shattering Burst Spinning Punch. Unlike the DVD set, the Blu-ray set will include the two movies, the parallel works, the random OVA episode, and a boat load of extras that aren't present in the DVD set. Not only that, you will also get DVD set's special features, along with an art book that includes concept art from the show that was never printed before. On top of that, the set will include digipaks, an illustration book that has an artwork by Imaishi for the book's cover, and the whole thing will be packed in a box that's covered with a cover illustration that will show you the true power of mankind.
As tempting as these extra goodies sound, I think I am going to stick with my Bandai DVDs for now. Between both versions, I have to will say that Aniplex's re-release for the DVD set is a bit of a good deal, since its price is almost equivalent to buying two NISA limited edition anime sets. Whereas the Blu-ray import set's price is still asking too much from consumers. Either way, if you have the spiral energy to obtain the Blu-ray set, then more power to you. Though it's unfortunate that none of the sets come with the Gurren Lagann backpack that was included in one of Bandai Entertainment's limited edition volumes.
Pre-orders for both sets will begin April 1st, which happens to be the most ironic thing out of this news. Gurren Lagann's DVD set will be available on May 14th, and the Blu-ray set will be available on June 26th. Thus adding another level of irony, because the 26th of June happens to be the day of my birthday. Before I ramble more about irony, be sure to check out the full image of the DVD goodies in the gallery below.
