I remember hearing about this fish's fate on the news at work, but today marks the first day that I get to learn of the striped beakfish's travel that took him/her from Japan to Long Beach, Washington.
Originally, this little fella was trapped in a bait box during the tsunami that hit Japan during the 2011 earthquake. For two whole years, the striped beakfish drifted through the sea on a small boat that he/she was in. After an 8,000 kilometer (5,000 miles) trip from Japan, the striped beakfish reached Long Beach at the end of March 2013, and he/she manages to find a new home at the Seaside Aquarium in Oregon. Best of all, the fish is now a superstar at the aquarium.
Once again, luck on was his/her side during these two years, since the striped beakfish had some plants and fishes to feed off of during the sea voyage. While he/she wasn't alone on the boat, the other four survivors ended being taken to be dissected at the Oregon State University.
It takes a ton of luck to go through the experience that Oregon's newest immigrant had to put up with. In reply to its travel, I give the fish a huge salute for the privileged fate that most creatures don't get when they drift through sea.
