Last year, Kyoto Animation (K-On!, Hyouka) produced a commercial to advertise the new light novel, Kyoukai no Kanata. It seemed like a fairly safe bet that they'd be animating a TV adaptation, but months upon months passed, and nothing surfaced.
Until now that is.
With the second volume of Kyoukai no Kanata shipping on April 8, KyoAni has revealed that they're working on a full anime adaptation of the books. We don't have much in the way of details, but if it's the same staff that worked on the commercial, this will mark the directorial debut of Taichi Ishidate. He's done some great work with Kyoto Animation, so I'm really hyped to see what he can do with a full series.
Kyokai no Kanata follows the story Akihito Kanbara, a high school sophomore who's half human and half yomu. Due to his special abilities, it's extremely difficult to hurt him as his wounds heal exceptionally fast. One day, he meets freshman Mirai Kuriyama just as she's about to leap from the school rooftop to her death. Like Akihito, Mirai is not a normal human; she can manipulate blood at will.
The series is described as a dark fantasy, which is all the more exciting to me since it'll be the first time Kyoto Animation tackles the genre. I've included the original commercial above to give you all a better idea of what you're in for.
I'm hyped for this one!
