It may only have been a month since Etrian Odyssey IV hit shelves in English, but it's been nearly nine months since it did the same in Japan, so now Atlus and Famitsu have spilled the beans regarding the future of the series. That future is to be called Etrian Odyssey: The Millennium Girl, for the 3DS.
Sounds kind of like a visual novel spinoff, that title, but thankfully it looks like actual genre is not part of the experimentation the staff was teasing. Instead, they'll be trying out having a more prominent story, featuring such original twists as mysterious ruins and an enigmatic amnesiac girl. Unlike previous games in the series The Millennium Girl will feature some voiced, pre-named party members to accompany the protagonist as he investigates the cause of mysterious earthquakes at the behest of the government of Etria. The party members themselves will have changeable classes to fit in with the series' traditionally player-created party, but will be more vocal and relevant to the larger plot.
Overall I think this is a good move, so long as Atlus doesn't lose sight of the fact that Etrian Odyssey is best as a dungeon-crawler and not a more typical JRPG in the Dragon Quest/Final Fantasy mold. I for one would appreciate a more effective motivator, as I usually burn out on dungeon-crawlers without a decent yarn to keep tugging me forward.
What do you think of the new changes?
